Fangzhou Xiao; undergrads in the School of Engineering

Team LumaCure is dedicated to improving public health around the world by creating effective solutions to current medical problems.

The team has identified one of the most significant factors that contribute towards neonatal deaths — hyperbilirubinemia, or jaundice. About 50 percent to 60 percent of full term babies and 80 percent of premature babies will have jaundice.

The team’s goal is to make a low cost and portable phototherapeutic treatment device. The team has already taken extensive efforts to make this a reality.

Their idea is to help treat neonatal jaundice using Electroluminescence instead of the existing LED / halogen lamp phototherapy solutions. This idea is brand new and has no relation to any previous work. The team has been researching and thinking about this problem, and feels it has come up with a better, cheaper solution that is not currently available.
