Committed to fostering excellence in teaching, research, scholarship and service, the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences awards all of the master of arts and doctor of philosophy degrees at Washington University. It is also the largest of Washington University’s seven graduate schools with approximately 1,800 students and more than 60 degree programs.

Since awarding the university’s first PhD in 1892, the goal of graduate education at Washington University has been to offer a research-focused academic experience to each individual student, training him or her to expand the frontiers of knowledge through original research and to make a meaningful difference in the world. The Graduate School of Arts & Sciences is committed to providing support and opportunities for teaching and professional development and student leadership to a diverse student body.
