HPV Vaccines for Ugandans

Mengyang Sun, student in the School of Medicine

School of Medicine student Mengyang Sun seeks to provide HPV vaccines to all eligible persons, male and female, ages 9 to 26 who live in the Gulu District in northern Uganda.  Cervical cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death among women in developing countries, killing about 270,000 women worldwide each year, with 85 percent of those deaths occurring in resource-poor settings.

Sun has worked on projects aimed at decreasing cervical cancer deaths in developing countries via screening and early detection. But mass HPV vaccinations would tackle the problem head on and have a profound effect.
