The Columbus Square Spot: A Community Based Farmers Market and Youth Program

Columbus Square Spot

Mallika Tamboli and Christopher G. Halline, undergrad students in Arts & Sciences

In 2013, Mallika Tamboli and Chris Halline are committed to improve access to healthy fruits and vegetables for residents of the Columbus Square neighborhood in St. Louis. They will partner with local farmers, gardening organizations, Washington University faculty, and the Patrick Henry Downtown Academy, to develop a summer program for youth that focuses on gardening, healthy eating and team building. The program will culminate in a sustainable, student-maintained farmers market for residents in the area that will effectively meet the community’s needs for healthy, low-price produce, while simultaneously engaging young people in a healthy extracurricular environment during the summer months. They recently received a Social Change Grant through Washington University’s Community Service Office that they intend to use toward implementing their vision in Columbus Square this summer. Some of their grant money is coming directly from CGI U through the CGI U “Impact” Grant.
